Two examples from an ICAEW Council Member and charity trustee of how confused people are by the current media and political furore about tax avoidance. One donor told him he was stopping giving to charity because “I don’t want to be labelled a tax avoider” and another had been asked by his teenage daughter “Are you one of those tax avoiders, Dad?” Thanks George Osborne!

So much for David Cameron’s Big Society encouragement of the charitable sector. There is an urgent need for an informed public debate on this subject, otherwise more than people’s feelings are going to be damaged.
